EPT Species List of Central Virginia: Photos of All Other Mayflies


(In the photo above, a Prong-gilled mayfly, genus Paraleptophlebia found in Montana.  Note the "tusks" that occur on western species of this genus.)

Photos of the small minnow mayflies (Baetidae), flatheaded mayflies (Heptageniidae), and spiny crawler mayflies (Ephemerellidae), by species, that I have found in our streams to date, were posted on 9/25, 9/28, and 9/29 respectively.  These are photos of the other mayfly families.  Most ID's have been left at the level of genus.

1. Ameletidae

Ameletus lineatus.  Size: not given by Beaty; Season: Winter into Spring.

2. Isonychiidae (Brush-legged mayflies)

Isonychia.  Size: not given by Beaty; Season: Spring, Summer, Fall -- most mature in Summer.

3. Leptohyphidae (Little stout crawlers)

Trichorythodes.  Size: 3-4 mm; Season: Summer



4. Caenidae (Small square-gill mayflies)

Caenis.  Size: not given by Beaty; Season: Summer.

5. Baetiscidae (Armored mayflies)

Baetisca.  Size: 6-10 mm; Season: Fall and Winter.

6. Leptophlebiidae (Prong-gilled mayflies)

Paraleptophlebia sp. (mollis?) 


Paraleptophlebia guttata.

Habrophlebia vibrans.  Size: not given by Beaty; Season: Fall, Winter, Spring.


Leptophlebia.  Size varies by species.  Season: Fall and Winter.



7. Ephemeridae (Common burrower mayflies)

Ephemera guttalata.  Size: up to 20 mm; Season: Spring.
